Last weekend, the ExCel arena in London played host to the first ever Gadget Show Live Christmas show, a consumer technology exhibition based around the popular Channel 5 show of the same name.  BSF went down to find out what are this year’s must have tech gifts:

1. FitBit One

Best described as a pedometer on steroids, this little device will change the way you think about exercise and diet forever. The FitBit One can calculate how many stairs you climb, the calories you burn, and even how more chocolate fingers you can eat while still being on target to reach your weight loss goals. All data is automatically loaded to your laptop / tablet / smartphone, so there is no excuse for this little wonder to start gathering dust after Christmas day.

Available from www.fitbit.com/uk/one priced £79.99

2. Nokia Lumia 920

We sang the praises of the new flagship Nokia smartphone when we got hold of one at the Windows Phone 8 launch event in November & we are still in love with the phone. 4.5” HD+ Pure Motion screen, Carl Zeiss camera lens, wireless charging, and the ultra personalised Windows Phone 8 operating system make this a late contender for Best Phone of 2012.

Available on EE, T-Mobile & Orange- Handset from free, depending on price plan.

3. Canon EOS M Digital SLR Camera

Launched last month, the EOS M is canon’s latest interchangeable lens camera posing as a compact.  Small enough to fit in a clutch bag, yet powerful enough to create magazine quality pictures.  18 megapixels, full HD video, and touch screen display make this a great gift for amateur photographers wanting to create professional standard images.

Available from www.Jessops.com priced £649.98

4. Tech21 Impactology Cases

By far the most impressive demonstration I saw at The Gadget Show Live Xmas came from the good people at Tech21 when they took a hammer to an iPhone covered in their revolutionary D30 Impact Material. I was expecting a gorilla glass mess once he uncovered the playdough like material, but this was not the case. I’m not smart enough to explain the science behind it, but to cut a long story short, you won’t find many cases that will be keep your phone, tablet, or laptop safer if dropped from a tall building.

Available from www.tech21.uk.com prices from £24.99 depending on model

5. iRobot Roomba

What we’ve all been waiting for, a robot that vacuums the floor unaided!  Simply press the Clean button and can clean up to 98% of your home without needing a cup of tea or a union sanctioned lunch break.  Don’t worry; sensors stop it from sucking up the family pet.

Available from www.irobot.com priced from £279

6. Nintendo Wii U

Don’t get this mixed up with the original Nintendo Wii- this is not a family friendly, happy go lucky tennis loving device.  The Wii U is attempting to bring the hardcore gamer back with titles such as ZombiU, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 & Assassins Creed 3 with The Gadget Show Live used as the platform to launch the console on Friday. The USP is that it comes with a controller that doubles up as a tablet cum handheld gaming device, but the jury is still out on whether it can live up to the gaming prowess of the PS3 or Xbox.

Available from www.amazon.co.uk priced £299

7. Attacknids Robot Toys

Billed as the ultimate battling robot, Attacknids are remote controlled six legged battling robots that fire foam discs at each other. Attacknids are this year’s must have tech toy and judging by the crowds at the ExCel, it’s not just the kids that will be playing with these come Christmas day.

Available from www.combatcreatures.com priced £69.99

8. Sonos Play Wireless Speakers

Not strictly new tech as Sonos is the original wireless music pioneers, creating their first speakers in 2002.  Once set up, Sonos speakers work at the touch of a button on your smartphone and can play your tunes throughout your home or even play different tracks in every room. The brand have not been widely recognised in the public domain, but with a new television advertisement campaign hitting our screens over Christmas, Sonos are set to create the soundtracks to many New Years Eve parties.

Available from www.sonos.com priced from £259

9. Wonderbook: Book of Spells (PS3)

Made exclusively for Playstation Move, Book of Spells is based on the Harry Potter tales transporting players to Hogwarts, conjuring spells and playing your way through mini games.  The game’s main selling point is that it uses augmented reality as the clever Playstation Eye camera magically transforms your bedroom into the halls of Hogwarts. JK Rowling has even written part of the story, making this Harry Potter spinoff essential for young Gryffindor alumni.

Available from www.amazon.co.uk priced £21.99. Playstation Move Required

10. Asus Vivotab

Windows 8 is designed for touch screen, and Asus have used this concept to create a tablet / mini notebook.  As powerful as an entry level notebook running a full version of Windows 8 but with the portability and battery life of a tablet- you can even buy a keyboard dock accessory for a proper computing experience.

Available from www.amazon.co.uk priced from £549.99
