Simone’s – The Healthy Bakery
First Look At Simone’s The Healthy Bakery
When I received an invitation to explore Simone’s – The Healthy Bakery prior to their official launch last week, I was skeptical! Healthy and Bakery in the same sentence, surely this was some sort of typing error?
Everyone knows that the concept “healthy cakes” are a myth, like Unicorns, Santa, and the Tooth Fairy since so many of the common ingredients are high in fat and sugar – which makes it taste devilishly good. No, this was definitely a typing error.
Or so I thought….
For those who haven’t heard yet, or had the chance to look over their Twitter timeline, Manchester is in full #GUILTFREE celebration over the launch of what could be Manchester’s first ever Healthy Bakery! All thanks to a lovely woman called Simone sharing her labour of love and healthy treats with the Manchester demographic.
Simone’s Healthy Bakery sits conspicuously in Manchester’s Market food court, situated on the upper floor of the Arndale Centre. At first glance, Simone’s Bakery could be mistaken for 1950’s designer kitchen – taken straight from the set of popular TV show Mad Men, with magnolia gloss tiled walls, a huge eggshell retro Smeg refrigerator (stocked to the brim with cake goodies) and matching Smeg cooker, that would probably have Betty Draper jumping up and down with glee, this is not your conventional market traders stall.
The interior style alone is worth your minute to study. There are no wasted steps in the presentation of the stall’s interior, from the American-inspired mason food jars perched charmingly on the top self to the beautiful custom designed marble kitchen counter displaying an array of enchanting desserts. The design itself turns the functionality of a traditional bakery on its head by creating a warm and homely ambiance.
Simone Yau and Nelson Lam are the creators behind the vision of Simone’s – The Healthy Bakery. As well as successfully launching and running the award winning, Viet – Shack that serves homemade, traditional Vietnamese dishes with a modern twist, which is also situated in the Food Court. Nelson also oversees his partner’s new venture although Simone masterminds the main creative direction and day-to-day operation of the business.
“We wanted our customers to feel at home as soon as they walked into the stall, which is why we went for the cozy kitchen interior design, topped with American style kitchen appliances. Our customers can walk into the kitchen, and open the fridge like they would do at home and select a cake of their choice,” – says Nelson.
“Simone, who has always had a keen interest in Yoga and healthy living, wanted to create a health-conscious alternative for those like herself with an unforgiving sweet-tooth, our motto is “eating healthy with a sweet tooth”, we bake all your favourite desserts while taking out the unhealthy aspects. Most people associate healthy produce with bland tastes, this reality does not have to be the case. There are so many healthy alternatives to refined oils, flours, and sugars. Our desserts are made so that a little indulgence doesn’t have to be a conflict with guilt. This has been Simone’s dream and I am proud to be supporting her” – Nelson.
The Healthy Bakery focuses on healthy, sugar free, gluten and dairy free, ingredients, white flour is replaced with coconut and whole wheat flour, dairy with vegan substitutes such as soya milk, and sugar with natural honey, brown sugar, and even beetroot which is a natural sweetener, crafting recipes that are not just healthy for people who like me, that has become self-conscious about what they are putting into their bodies but creating recipes for vegans, vegetarians, and those restricted by certain dietary requirements.
Simone’s serve a variety of assortments to suit the healthy diet, from peanut butter and green tea brownies, Blueberry Muffins, to healthy salads, layered smoothies and artisan sandwiches made with sourdough – to name a few. Some of the recipes are lower in saturated fat and virtually fat and sugar-free!
The bakery also serve a selection of raw baked treats like the blueberry cheesecake – which I was given a sample of to try which is a surprising winner, tasty and surely one of your five a day? The peanut butter brownie did not disappoint either!
Nothing in taste has been compromised in the offering that Simone’s Healthy Bakery provides. If anything it offers diversity for the mindful eater in the grab-and-go’s vibrant food scene. Do I still think ‘Healthy Cakes’ are a myth, definitely not!
