NEW: SMITH’S OF SMITHFIELD COCKTAIL LOUNGE
Smithfield was once world renowned for public executions, peasants revolts and the still operational meat market- but more recently, the Smith’s of Smithfield bar and restaurant has been reigniting the flame that the Smithfield of old so popular. Housed within a Grade II listed building, the owners of Smith’s lovingly restored the four storey venue opposite the market which boasts a ground floor bar, 2 restaurants, a private dining room, and now a brand new cocktail lounge on the 1st floor.
The new layout has been well thought out with a barn like theme, complete with zinc walls and milk tank bar stools. I was invited to the launch last week and had the pleasure of being treated to a host of signature cocktails from Tiziano Tasso (former head bartender at The Ivy) and his talented team of mixologists. My favourites included the tequila and hibiscus flower infused Don Hibisco and the BBQ Martini, an interesting take on the vodka martini using smoked wood chip infused vodka and comes with a side of pork scratchings to boot.
Despite being rushed off his feet, we managed to get a quick word with Tiziano and he showed us the homemade bitters he produces to help give his drinks that bespoke taste that you will only find in Smith’s of Smithfield. Another great aspect of the bar is that it has a delicious light bite menu, and I would highly recommend trying the Char Sui belly pork buns and/or the smoked cheese and herb croquettes.
At around £9 each, the cocktails are fairly priced for this part of London, and having observed the high quality ingredients and care put into making each drink, a visit to Smith’s of Smithfield is a must for all cocktail enthusiasts.
