THE LEGEND OF ‘THE KRAKEN’
Pirate legend tells us that the Kraken is a ferocious, giant octopus that hid in the depths of the Scandinavian seas feeding on whales, ships, and any poor souls that happened to be upon them.
To name a dark, spiced rum after the mythological beast is slightly odd to say the least, so I decided to explore further.
The bottle is a striking Victorian flagon style and makes The Kraken stand out, even on a crowded drinks shelf. The content of the bottle is even more unusual than the name or the bottle. To call it dark rum is an understatement- Black as ink would be a better description. It looks like The Kraken should taste like liquorice but thankfully it is a smooth, thick, spiced rum with hints of caramel. The makers have blended 2 year old Trinidad & Tobago rum with 14 spices, and there are strong flavours of cinnamon and cloves- perfect for Christmas.
Although it can be served neat or on the rocks but at 40% ABV, may be a little too strong for early evening sipping. I found The Kraken to be most enjoyable served ice cold with coke, or with ginger beer with lime (Affectionately called ‘The Perfect Storm’).
