The Plough At Swan Wharf Review
If you haven’t heard of The Plough at Swan Wharf yet, you’re forgiven; nestled deep in Hackney Wick it can be a little tricky to find and rather far East, but trust us, it’s well worth the pilgrimage. Boasting phenomenal views of the Olympic Stadium and the River Lea, The Plough is an incredibly unique drinking/dining experience. The space occupies a former sofa warehouse and much of the original framework remains resulting in a distinctive Berlin-esque industrial vibe.
With the largest outdoor drinking area in Hackney, their sun drenched terrace is sure to be buzzing all summer. The mix of plants, wooden trestle tables and old sofas work well against the hand painted mural interiors and the whole space feels cool and fresh without being try-hard. In addition to this, the crowd seemed genuinely interesting – a mix of skaters and fashiontypes rather than the hipsters that populate most of east London.
The small but perfectly formed menu features a range of American comfort foods such as burgers, tacos and fried chicken all served in classic red baskets. We ordered big and had the Fish Island Tacos, Cheeseburger and Kale Caesar and it was frankly, all a delight.
The fish tacos were made up of luxurious beer battered breed which was set off nicely by a spicy remoulade, our only complaint would be that the portoin size of two was a little measly, but maybe we’re being greedy. The burger was decadent and perfectly rare that kind of yellow American cheese that we love to hate. And, although it sounds nothing special, the kale caesar has to be the best we’ve ever had, drenched in a salty, moorish dressing and with sourdough croutons this was a serious salad that’s well worth ordering.
It’s also worth noting that they have an extensive list of cocktails and craft beers from Hackney Brewery as well as wine from Borough Wines – we challenge you not to love this place!
